The trip was from Dec. 21st to 25th and her birthday is 25th. Yes! It's Christmas. Nana and I definitely wanted to take the party on her birthday but we knew we would be on the bus back home on that day. We had many ideas for the party and planned very carefully and finally dicided to have it on the second day at night. Of course, we strickly kept it secret.

Nana and I brought so many stuff, like candles, adornments, illumination lights, and a white spray. We also had a present for Yuri that we got at Disney Land; a stuffed doll of Stich. Because she is a great fan of Stich, it wasn't so easy to pick one out of so many goods and every time I heard Yuri saying "Cute" or something, Nana and I were secretly communicating with eyes.

On the second day at night, we, three girls arrived at the hotel aroud midnight. We were totally exhausted. While Yuri was unpacking her stuff, Nana and I didn't do anything. That way, we thought, she would be taking shower first.
When she finnaly went into the bath, Nana and I jumped up and started decorating the room with the stuff we brought. We were really in hurry.

"Happy 20th Birthday Yuri!!" We said to her with crackers when she opened the door.
The surprise was in success. She was very much surprised that we organized it without making her notice. That was so much fun and we took lots and lots of pictures.

Trip to Tokyo

As Yuri said, we, Nana, Yuri and I went to Tokyo together last Cristmas!
To make the trip cheapest, we went there by night bus. It was totally damn and Nana and I didn't get enogh sleep, while Yuri was dreaming of Mickey and Minnie!

Although we were very much exhausted from the bus trip, once arrived and saw Disney Land, we got very excited and completly forgot about the tiredness we had.

On the fist day, we were in Disney Land. Because it was a weekday, there wasn't any crowd in the park at all and we were able to enjoy most of the attractions there by 3. What lucky girls we were!! The only thing that made us so disappointed was the electrical parade was canceled because of the wind.

On the second day, we went to Disney Sea which is next to Disney Land. It was the national holiday so that there were a lot more people than yesterday. We, however, slept over that morning and when we arrived there, it was already 11. Luckily we tried all the attractions that we wanted to do, including the new one. Everything was so much fun!!!

On the last day, we were in the beds until 10. Yes! We slept over AGAIN!! Even WORSE!!!!
Moreover, it was already 3 when we were finally free from our luggages. We were sarching for lockers for like an hour and a half, going back and forth between stations. That made us get boring and loose our excitment for the sightseeing in Tokyo City.

ANYWAY, I had soooooooo much fun with Yuri and Nana out there! I wish we could have stay there for few more days.

Contrasting

Even if grown up in a same culture, men and women gain different ways of expressing themselves. This difference of the communication styles between men and women come from the natural characteristics of each gender.

Since women love to chat, they expand conversations from a single question while men rarely ask questions more than they need. Men usually ask questions only to get information and thus they expect simple “Yes” or “No” answers. On the other hand, women often ask questions for which they already know the answers so that they develop their talk further more. For example, when a woman saw her friend who had his/her hair cut, she would definitely ask him/her, “Did you have your hair cut?” Needless to say, she knows the answer for it. Her primary purpose is not to have an answer, “Yes” but to keep talk going.

Whereas women try to emphasize stories by using various word choices, men tell stories and facts in most concise way. Men prefer to have results first and then they are eager to know the processes. Therefore, when women add too much emotions and senses to their stories, it becomes difficult for men to keep their mind concentrated on the main point. Women, however, take care of processes rather than the results. To share experiences that they had and to tell how they felt, women decorate their stories with numbers of words.

HW for Scott

In Scott’s class, we watched 30 Days series again and this time was focused on straight man and gay man. First of all, as the introduction says, “homosexuality” is a clinical term. Much of the prejudice against lesbians and gay men is based on stereotypes and lack of information. In this video clip, a straight guy, Ryan has to do live with a gay man whose name is Ed for the next 30 days. Ryan is very Christian and is against gay men because the bible says homosexuality is sin. He was little worried about what would happen to between him and the gay man at first. For Ed, he was also anxious to have a room mate.
Before I watched this clip, I had no idea about the Castro District in San Francisco but it taught me that the town is notorious for gay men town. There were flags colored with rainbow colors and those colors stand for gay in the U.S. (not sure)
Ryan visited a church that allows gay men to attend the meetings. Since I’m not a Christian, I don’t think homosexuality is a sin but Ryan doesn’t think that way. He met a lady, Reverend Penny at the church. When he was asked why he thinks homosexuality is sin, he answered that’s because the bible says so. Then he was also asked what if it was reverse and heterosexuality was sin, he said nothing. From this conversation, I found Ryan has difficulty understanding gay men/homosexuality because he is not in that position.
As Ryan and Ed spent more time, Ryan gradually feels comfortable being around gay men. I think that’s because he knows much more about Ed and how the family member of homosexual people feel about them. I think to experience a complete different type of life has great influence on people. It was hard time for Ryan to live around gay men for 30 days but he said it was meaningful in the end. I think to eliminate the prejudice of homosexuality needs people to know what it is and get closer to those people so that there’ll be no discrimination over homosexuality.

Once You Open the Door...

Once you open the door, you’ll feel fresh air from the outside.
Once you open the door at the beginning of the year, you’ll make new friends there.
Once you open the door for your job interview, you’ll find yourself doing fine.
You have more and more doors waiting you to open in the future.
You have no idea what will be there beyond them until you open them.
I know you will be afraid of knocking and opening the doors but Don’t Be.
See what’s going to happen.
Sure you’ll be OK.
And even if you had bad day, that’s ok.
There’ll be your family inside of the door.

Once you open the door...
Once you open the door...

HW for Scott

SUPER SIZE ME

In the latest three classes, we saw a movie, “Super Size Me” though I missed the first part. This movie is directed by Morgan Spurlock who is also a director of the movie, “30 Days” and we’ve already watched this one.
Every time I saw Super Size ME DVD at the rental shops, I got very interested in it and was eager to watch it but I never tried. But I finally came to check it out in classes.
Generally, it was quite good in terms of teaching me that how the obese situation caused by fast food in the US is going on. I just can’t believe that 2 out of every three adults are overweight or obese and over 37% of American children and teens are carrying too much fat on them. How come such unbelievable situation occurred? The answer is because of the fast food products, especially McDonald’s. It is so popular fast food that ALL Americans, even little kids know its name and most of them have eaten them at least once!
Many Japanese people also go and have some McDonald’s but there aren’t as many fat people in Japan as in the US. The difference is how often people have them. I don’t know how many times Japanese people have McDonald’s on average but as for me, I rarely eat fast food and I think it’s about once a month or less now. I used to have McDonald’s 3 times a week or more when I was a senior student of high school and that’s because there was McDonald’s in front of the cram school. It’s reasonable and FAST!! I ate and ate and ate… and ended up having health problems.
I think Americans need to care about their health more and more. When Morgan interviewed strangers on the road in the film and asked them what the calorie is, none of them was able to answer it. I was very surprised. In Japan, people especially women so much care about the calorie that they take and they have strong self-control on diet. Compared to them, it seems Americans have less self-control over the diet they eat than Japanese.
I think all American people should watch this movie and realize what would happen after eating too much fast food.

In Class Work

Just as English has connotations, Japanese also has some connotations and I would like to show you the different usage of the words, meaning 'overweight' in Japanese.
Girls in Japan often ask their friends, "Do you think I'm overweight?" even skinny girls do so. Ofcouse, nobody expects to hear the answer, "YES" and nobody wants to say directly that she is fat. Then, what they tell her is either 'fukuyoka' means voluptuous or 'kenkouteki' means healthy. That way, she doesn't feel bad hearing those words even they still mean that she is little overweight.
I think this connotation is everywhere in the world, especially for women but Japanese has much more ways to say one thing than other cultures.

YSWEETSY

As most of you know, Yuri, Nana and I are members of sweets sisters which is not a club, nor circle but we just created for ourselves enjoying having lots of sweets!! We are too good friends and always chatting over some sweets all the time. Since Nana had been in the hospital for a while, we missed her for like a month.
For the first time after a long break, we, Yuri, Nana, and I finally had sweets activity today but this time was a special one! We went to see a movie.
The plan was to see the movie, called "In Her Shoes" and we were really looking forward to see it!! Howere, though we rushed to the theater from the station, the tickets were already sold out when we arrived. That was unbeliebable!!!!! We were such poor girls;-(
Before long, we got over from the shock and decided to have dinner together instead of movie. On the way to the restaurant, I saw a poster of a movie that I desired to watch and I said, "woo, that's what I wanna see sometime!" Nana got interested in it after reading the brief summary, so did Yuri. Here we were back to the plan, watching a movie but a different one - Elizabethtown.

That was awesome:) I'm not gonna tell you about the story in case you will see it later. I highly recommend you to watch it sometime.

EMERGENCY

Yesterday, I had first experience of being carried by AMBULANCE!! Wow!I know it sounds seriously but I’m ok now so I tell you about the detail.

Because I’m very weak at getting up in the mornings, I’m running out of the time for breakfast almost every day and I always have something like a rice ball on the way to the uni.

Yesterday was the same as usual. When I was on the first train, I felt sick and I thought that was from being in the crowd. While I was walking and waiting for the traffic light to change, I felt really really poorly or even I had a foreboding that i was going to be uncounscious so i decided to sit down right next to the crosswalk to rest myself. Fortunately, there was also a police box.

Before long, one of the police man approached me and asked me, "what's wrong!?" and i said i felt bad. Then he said, "why don't you rest in the office, there?" When i stood up to go in there, I fell over...

For few seconds, i wasn't sure what was going on but all the police men told me i looked seriously pale and i should go and see doctor. They called the ambulance immediately and it brought me to the hospital.

I had blood test, cardiogram and infusion there. I really thank for everyone who helped me!!! One thing i'm not happy with is that the nurse have failed injecting on my left wrist once and it still hurts!!!;-(

Anyway this is all about the happening from yesterday!

Have you ever been carried by ambulance?? why???

Intelligence Inventory

2. People develop their adaptability to the society and the ability to get along with surrounding people well. That's why the government provides nine-years compulsory education where every child is given chances to develop their own abilities equally in many ways. Do you think intelligence is fixed at birth or is it constantly changing?

I think intelligence is both fixed at birth and constantly changing. The potential ability is inherited from parents, for example, spatial intelligence(on of the Gardner's eight types of intelligence) but at the same time, it could also be developed as practicing. In the other type of intelligence formulated by Sternberg, for instance, contextual intelligence is constantly changing as experiencing hardships again and again. I think intelligence level is perpetually increasing as time goes by.

4. How has your education affected your intelligence?

The education I've been taking for many years greatly affected my intelligence in many ways, especially linguistic intelligence. I'm sure the English education started from junior high has biggest influences on it. If the English classes were not provided, I would not have been studying any foreign languages in my life. Not only English but the educaion also led me to be able to use my own mother ongue, Japanese properly.

my dog

This lovely little dog is my cute sister, VIVI☆
She is gonna be 4 yrs old next month and it's been about 3 yrs and a half since she became the member of my family. I was gonna give her a name and my idea was "VIVIEN." It seemed alright for everyone except for my mom. She said it's easier to call her just "VIVI" and mom's idea was adopted.

I think Vivi ranks 5 of us including herself and it goes...
1, my dad
2, my mom
3, my older sis
4, herself
5, ME!!!
If she had the ability to speak, she would say exactly the same thing. Although she thinks that way, she often behaves more gently to me than to my sis and I think that's because my sis always treats Vivi as a stuffed doll. In this picture, you can see the way how my sis plays with Vivi...poor her:-(( but...don't you think it looks very funny!? :-))

Vivi is really crazy about chikuwa(fish paste cooked in a bamboo-like shape), kamaboko(steamed fish paste) and cheese!!! She has a special ability to identify the sounds of rapping films for chikuwa and kamaboko. Whatever she's doing, sleeping or playing, once she hears that sound, she rushes to the kitchen and she never reacts to the other noise that sounds the same for people. It seems impossible for you to imagine but it is true!!!

TONKATSU

Part Time Job

I'm working at a tonkatsu shop as a waitress in Kyoto.
I found this job by failing at the interview of starbucks coffee shop so I wasn't interested in it at first (oh, well, I'm still not!). He doesn’t fall in love with anyone for a long term period. One day, when he came up in a café to have his breakfast, he saw a cute girl over his seat. He felt something in his heart. That girl was Lucy from local area. He managed to have breakfast with her and they talked up until the lunch time. It was obvious that they both liked each other and they promised to have breakfast together next day again.
Henry was very excited on the way coming back to the café to sea Lucy. When he saw her again, Lucy got upset at him talking to her without distances. She did not remember him or even know him at all. Then he came to know about her brain condition. Lucy had been in a big accident about a year ago. Because her brain was damaged badly, she lost short-term memory and can not remember the things happened after that accident and so her life is stopping at October 13th of last year. She lived the same days for last couple of months doing the same thing.
Her family, dad and brother, tells us how her life is going. They follow the same routine every single day trying not to confuse her. Once her dad noticed about Henry, he told to stay away from his daughter otherwise he would mess her mind up. At first, Henry was kind of at a loss but he really liked her so he tried every single idea to hook her up. It sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t.
The important scene of this movie goes…when Lucy was having her breakfast at the café just as same as the other days, she found a police getting a ticket on her car outside of the café. Then she saw the news paper said it was not October 13th. She was really confused and run away back to her home. Her dad explained to her about the accident and she did nothing but cried out.
Henry made a video tape for Lucy to let her realize about her condition by checking it and it seemed to be working well on her. Gradually Lucy started to keep her diary to remember him and they seemed doing well. But then she ended up burning it to forget about him because she thought there’s no future for her.
Somehow, Lucy was dreaming of him every night and she sort of remembered him. When Henry noticed about this, he rushed up to her and asked her if she knew him.
At last, they got married and got a kid.

I think this movie tells you that even if the memories are lost, they can be also reproduced over and over again. You should never give up on someone you really like. As you go for it, there will always be some way following.

H.W. for Scot's class

1. What did you think aout the first episode of "30 Days"?

When I first saw this episode of “30 Days”, I was little behind from others because I missed the first part of it. I was little confused whether Morgan and Alex truly live on minimum wage or not. Then I knew it was just a pretending story though they really lived on it for 39 days. I think to know how it would be like living in that way, and to think about people who are practically living on minimum wages are good thing to improve the situation and make their lives little easier, but did Morgan and Alex go through exactly the same hardship as people in the real world? I think the answer is NO.
It is true that they had hard period of 30 days living on minimum wage and had no luxuries or even they were lack of necessities. Also I’m sure they knew that hard time would not last forever. For the people who are really living in this way, there would be a huge field of hopelessness ahead of them.

2.What if you could live someone else's life for just 30 days?

If I could live as a famous actress for 30 days, my life would be totally different. My life now is like repeating the same thing everyday during the weekday but as a famous actress, I think my schedule would go crazy and there would be no free time for myself. Then I would be down and feel depressed all the time. I won’t be able to go shopping naturally, or even I won’t be able to date with someone like I do now because it would soon be a big news. I would have to be hiding at any places at any moments. I can’t stand up with such busy, stuffy, and uncomfortable life even for 10 days!!! Experiencing someone’s life would not be easy for me but I really think that it is important to know and learn about somebody’s way of living.

Gestures

One of the common gestures in Japan is formed by putting your hands on your head with sticking your index fingers into the air. That way it looks like a demon using your index fingers in place of its horns. It means that someone you saw or someone you were talking to is angry or in a bad mood.

For example, when your dad comes back from work in an ill-tempered mood and you want to tell your mom that he would easily get angry without making him aware, you just make this gesture. Also, you can make an expression that shows her to BE CAREFUL or gives some warning. Then, it would work more effectively. If you try to tell somebody else, make sure the person you are taking about doesn’t see you so that you are on the safe side.

after having studied about...

Haricane Katrina

I was surprised that 2/3 of people in New Orleans were black people and many of them were poor. Why is this situation happening? Why did the government leave the people without helping right after the haricane was gone? If it were happening in, for example, New York city, I think the government would start helping people immediately.
I read an article said that police officer closed a bridge leading down to a safe place. They tried not to let the people in New Orleans flee to the white areas. I felt very sorry for them.
I think for people in New Orleans, no signs of recovery from the terrible flood would seem hopeless and they would feel mad for sure. Somebody from other states should take an action and save the millions of people who are now living on the messed streets.

What was your reaction to this unbelievable disaster? And what do you think of the people in New Orleans?

Happiness Inventory

Q3. What do friends mean to your happiness?

Friends are all in all to me. I mean they play an important role in my daily life. I don’t think I can spend even a day without either talking or contacting with them. They make me happy. I always have fun when I’m talking, being silly, and hanging around with them so that I laugh a lot and a lot. Laughing makes me happy as well. Thus friends bring happiness to me a lot and they are very important for me.

Q6. What do you want to do to maintain your health?

I want to have regulated life cycle, enough sleeping, balanced food, and moderate exercise to keep my body healthy. Those activities mainly maintain physical health and surely they all play important parts but when I think of my mental health, I want to have lots of fun and laugh a lot. As I mentioned before, laughing makes me happy. It removes me from unhappiness. I believe I would be really healthy if I take all of them into action.

Q10. What would it take to make you happy now?

I would be happy if I always stay optimistic and stop thinking negatively. Having read those theories of happiness, I realized that being unhappy means no good to me and it would bring me unhappiness. I believe there would regularly be a happy time after experienced an unhappy time. The key point is not to care so much about the bad things that make me unhappy and always have positive attitude toward my future. I think I’d better follow this idea.

summary of summer

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Today, I got my driver's license^^

Anyway, it is long time no blogging since I made the last one. SO, I'm gonna tell you how my summer vacation went up until now.

First, I entered at the driving school, quite close to my home, in this August. For the first part of the classes, I attended almost everyday because I had no big plan for this summer and I finished the first part in about 10-days!! I know that was fast!!!!! I was doing well by this stage....BUT my summer days got crazy busy from the middle of August.
Everything happened in a very short time.
The baseball team of my high school got a chance to entry to the KOSHIEN game by winning in the Kyoto trials. My friends and I went to see and cheer the players for many times and they did really really really well. My school, Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High got the second place of all the high schools in Japan!! Isn't it great or what!?!?!? All the games they played were so much exciting and I had lots of fun there.
ummmm......and.... I got a part time job...finally!!! I'm working at a 'tonkatsu' restaurant in Kyoto. Though I'm working there, I've never had chance to eat foods served at that shop so I don't know how it taste:-(
In spare times from those busy days, I continued getting the driving classes done little by little. I passed all the test without failing and I got the license today.

This is how the vacation went as a whole.... THE END

OHHH, this blog must be the longest one I've ever made!!

Another Fighting

COCKROACHES

They are the most disgusting, nasty, ugly and dirty creatures in this whole world. Needless to say, I HATE them. What is the worst creture that makes me feel sick? YES- it is COCKROACHES.

Few days ago, when I was sick, a cockroach showed up in my room for the first time in 9 years. At first, I was very much shocked that this nasty creature finally came up to my room and I was frozen for a while. I called out for a help to my mom but when she got to my room, it was too late. It dissapeared into somewhere but in my room. I didn't want to stay with it in a same room so I escaped from there for some time. After I came back, it was there, under the magazines. I stopped for a sec to make up my mind. Get the tissue box. And Hit it. The first attack didn't do much and it was moving around!!! I felt shvers. I hit it more harder and it seemed to be dead this time. I took out many tissues and tried to grab it BUT it started to run away. It was still alive even it had been attacked for two times. The third attack finally killed it. I was surprised with the strength of its life.

I think that cockroach was desperate to escape from my attack but I was desperate to get it away from me, as well. From today, many kinds of stalls like crepe, frankfurt, takoyaki, fried chicken, are set on the street during night time. This is so much FUN!! But the worst thing is that hundreds of thousands of people gather and fill the street!! There will be no space around you. You will probably get stepped on your foot again and again. AND it's gonna be very humid there.
